Say the Hard Thing First

Opening Question:

How do we speak truth when it’s uncomfortable—especially in leadership, business, or family?

This discussion offers faith-based wisdom for speaking truth with both courage and compassion, reminding us to seek God’s timing, lead with love, and trust Him with the outcome when hard conversations are necessary.

Faith-Based Guidelines for Saying the Hard Thing First

1. Lead with Love, Not Fear

“Speak the truth in love.” — Ephesians 4:15

  • Solution: Truth without love wounds. Love without truth misleads. Start with both.

2. Pray Before You Speak

“Let your words be few.” ~ Ecclesiastes 5:2

  • Solution: Ask for wisdom and timing. Not every moment is the right moment—but silence isn’t always faithful.

3. Honor God, Not Just People

“We must obey God rather than men.” ~ Acts 5:29

  • Solution: Don’t avoid truth to protect comfort or reputation. Faithfulness may require discomfort.

4. Be Clear, Not Cruel

“Gracious words are a honeycomb.” ~ Proverbs 16:24

  • Solution: Say what needs to be said—clearly, kindly, and without delay.

5. Trust the Outcome to God

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” ~ Exodus 14:14

  • Solution: Speak faithfully, then release control. God honors courage rooted in truth.
