CORE SCORE PROGRAM

FARMING AND RANCHING

FAMILY FARMS AND RANCHES

Core Score works with many entrepreneurs who are involved with agriculture. It is common that people don’t see farmers or ranchers as entrepreneurs. If you are involved in row-crop farming, farming grapes, farming peaches or raising livestock…sheep, cattle, goats…whatever, you are an entrepreneur. You are providing a product or service to the public. Just because it happens to be a commodity doesn’t mean you are not an entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurs in Farming & Ranching

Many entrepreneurs involved in agriculture are also involved with their family. They are stewards of their family assets and the natural resources of soil and water. How does a farmer or rancher ensure their assets are passed to the next generation? Does the next generation enjoy that way of life?

Working with Farm Families

Core Score has found there are many different solutions for working with farmers and ranchers. We are always excited to work with farm families because they have a huge impact on feeding the world. We also realize the importance of helping these families succeed and have an impact in a way that that honors God.

Many of the farmers and ranchers have a very strong faith. They are not willing to give up their family and their faith as a measure of cost to succeed. It is a real joy to work with these entrepreneurs.

Many farm families have heirs who do not have a working relationship with the operation though. Farming is a capital-intensive business. Land owners do not control the price or change in value of the land. Equipment continues to increase in costs and many heirs don't understand why a combine and header would cost more than $500,000.

Leaving the agricultural enterprise in non-active owner's hands can often put operating owners at a significant disadvantage in the market place. It's often than nonactive owners do not receive a competitive return annually on their value which can cause disfunction and animosity towards operators. The capital needs of an operation can require reinvestment to occur which also keeps a return being paid out. What is equitable and what is fair are two different questions. We believe that they are to be considered in every agricultural enterprise.

Many operator families have the assets all inside of one entity. Not right and not wrong, they just have not ever seen reasons to operate differently. They have not seen the power of having different assets held in different manners and for different reasons. There are many reasons including succession planning, income planning, transition planning and liability purposes that families might benefit by such strategies.

Core Score’s owners have a commercial vineyard, so we understand the rewards and we also understand the cost…financial cost, backbreaking work, and having no control over the weather.
